Studio Musician Tracks / File Swapping
Studio musicians (or session players) are musicians that can be brought into a recording studio to track additional instruments on a song or music project. These musicians are typically hired on a work-for-hire basis.
From Instrumentals to Vocals
Depending on the recording project, session musicians may be hired to provide audio tracks involving:
- Drums
- Bass
- Guitar
- Piano
- Horns
- Orchestra
- Percussion
DJs, turntablists, sequence programmers, and vocalists may also be hired to provide audio tracks for a recording project.
When to Use a Studio Musician
Studio musicians are used in any situation where musical skills are needed on a short-term basis, ranging from a few hours to many months. Typical uses of studio/session musicians include:
- In a recording studio to provide backing for any number of musical genres and projects
- To provide musical or vocal backing for established solo artists or groups, both in the studio and in concerts and other live performances
- To provide additional instruments or vocals when needed by a band or ensemble
- In ensembles for theatrical productions
- To act as temporary replacements for permanent members of a band or ensemble
File-swapping
File-swapping refers to the practice of making audio files easily available for other users to download over the Internet and smaller networks. Studio quality sound files can be custom recorded to a reference track, processed, and then mixed into a stereo "image."
These audio files can then be inserted directly into the recording software of the end user. Once added, the sound files can be mixed down and a master mix can be created.
