Remixing
A remix refers to a song that has been altered so that it differs from the original version. A remix can breathe new life into a bad production, or it can create a new market for artists/bands by expanding their fan base. In copyright terms, a remix is considered a "derivative work."
Adding Fresh Elements
Re-creating a song by remixing often involves the addition of one or more of the following elements:
- A featured artist
- New or rearranged verses
- Instrumentals
Modern Dance Music
Modern dance music commonly uses this technique to create a song that has a broad appeal — an appeal that crosses different musical genres and dance floors. Dance music remixes often include featured artists, commonly musicians adding instruments.
Hip-hop and R&B
Hip-hop, rap and R&B music will also frequently feature an artist in a remix (usually a singer or MC). In an R&B remix, the original music and some, if not all, of the original verses are retained, but a new verse(s) may be added and rapped or sung by a featured artist. Sometimes the verses may be rearranged, depending on how the producers decide to remix the song.
